A new Australian police unit armed with military assault rifles has begun patrolling the streets of Sydney, in a first for the country, following last December's Bondi Beach attack. Police in Waukegan, Illinois, are investigating after metal hairpins and wire were reportedly found inside wrapped, unopened Halloween candy collected during trick-or-treating. Police urged parents and guardians to check every piece of candy carefully before children eat it, and not to eat anything that looks tampered with. Anyone who finds suspicious candy is asked to contact Waukegan police. The investigation is ongoing, and police have not said where the candy came from.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed has announced that the provincial police will be equipped with drones, anti-drone systems, bulletproof vehicles and armoured personnel carriers. He said Safe City projects were being expanded to 12 districts, with work moving fast in Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Lakki Marwat, and that the aim was to complete those three projects within a year. New police stations and posts are also being built in five northern districts to strengthen security arrangements.

Sialkot police said on Sunday they had arrested six people and registered a case after the stampede at a TikToker's mehndi event, where the death toll has now risen to two and 18 people were injured. TikToker Muhammad Ansar Jatt, known as Mr Pattlo, who had announced the event and a prize draw at Faraz Cricket Ground on Daska Road, is nominated in the case, and police say he fled the scene after the incident. Police took into custody 50 motorcycles and a car that were meant for the lucky draw. District Police Officer Dost Muhammad said teams are working to arrest the remaining suspects, and the case, registered at Motra police station, accuses the organisers of violating permit conditions and safety rules.

The UK police watchdog will investigate the Metropolitan Police over its handling of a letter received in January 2019 about the Duchess of Sussex's father. The Independent Office for Police Conduct said an independent investigation was required into the force's failure to pass on allegations of serious offending in the letter to relevant overseas authorities at the time. The Met, which voluntarily referred itself to the watchdog, said the letter was instead passed to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness, and that it now intends to make referrals to overseas agencies. The investigation does not by itself establish wrongdoing by any individual.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised 510 members of the South African National Defence Force to support police in KwaZulu-Natal from 9 October to 30 November 2026, under Operation PROSPER. The soldiers will help during planned marches and stay ready to respond to possible unrest, after violence linked to anti-immigration protests in the province. Ramaphosa told Parliament about the deployment in a letter dated 21 October, and the operation is expected to cost about 34 million rand. The unrest followed misinformation about a Constitutional Court judgment on immigration.

The death of American actress Hayden Panettiere, 36, has been ruled accidental, with police in Greenville, South Carolina closing their investigation more than two months after the Heroes and Nashville star died. She was found unresponsive at a home on August 16, and toxicology tests later found fentanyl, Xanax and several other substances in her system. Police said the medical examiner's determination confirmed an accidental overdose. Questions remain over a separate federal inquiry reportedly involving the US Drug Enforcement Administration, which has not been confirmed as closed. Panettiere, who rose to fame as cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes, had spoken openly about her struggles with substance abuse.

South African police have asked the courts to stop planned marches by anti-illegal immigration groups in the coastal city of Durban, after threats of violence and plans to burn down a refugee reception office. A court in KwaZulu-Natal has already granted an interim order against the demonstrators and will decide on Friday whether to make it permanent. Recent marches turned violent, with at least one foreign national reported killed last week, and some African countries have repatriated their citizens. The government has sent more than 500 soldiers to the province, and President Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed to clamp down on lawbreakers, saying some are exploiting public feeling over migration to cover criminality.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered police to pursue, arrest and prosecute those behind the killings of 43 councillor candidates and campaigners ahead of local elections. He condemned the killings in the strongest terms, saying those responsible were acting against the will of South Africans and undermining people's right to stand for election and campaign. The victims include an ANC councillor killed in Mamelodi East in July 2025 and an EFF member found dead in Delmas in June this year. Ramaphosa said political violence could not be accepted in a democracy and vowed that the country's democratic gains since the end of apartheid would not be set back by the killings.

At least 64 people were killed and 81 arrested on Tuesday in a large police operation against the Comando Vermelho gang in Rio de Janeiro's Complexo do Alemao and Penha favelas, in what the state government called the deadliest operation in the city's history. More than 2,500 civil and military police took part, targeting 26 communities, and officials said the dead included four police officers. Police were carrying out 69 arrest warrants and 180 search warrants after an investigation lasting more than a year, and seized dozens of rifles. The governor described the action as a response to what he called narcoterrorism and an effort to stop the gang expanding its territory. The operation came days before Rio hosts major climate-related events.
