Climate scientists urge billions a year to study cooling the planet

Climate scientists led by Sir David King, Britain's former chief scientific adviser, have urged Britain and other nations to spend tens of billions of pounds a year researching ways to cool the planet, including brightening clouds and refreezing the Arctic. Their report, from the Climate Crisis Advisory Group, says the growing climate threat needs a huge rise in geoengineering research, though that is not a licence to deploy such techniques. Britain already spends 67 million pounds on the work, and the call comes ahead of the COP31 climate conference in Turkey from November 9.

Study: climate change appears to have stopped the next ice age

A new study in the journal Science suggests the next ice age may have already begun about 2,000 years ago, only to be cut short by human-driven climate change. Researchers studied the Barnes Ice Cap in Arctic Canada, the last remnant of the vast Laurentide Ice Sheet. It began slowly expanding again around 2,000 years ago, but around 1960 rising summer temperatures reversed that growth. Since then it has been losing more ice in summer than it regains in winter, and scientists say this is no reason to celebrate, as the same warming is melting ice caps across the Arctic.

Giant Sahara solar farms could shift global climate, models suggest

Covering a huge part of the Sahara with solar panels could change the climate far beyond the desert, according to climate models. Because panels are darker than pale sand, they would absorb more heat and shift air circulation, bringing more rain to the Sahara itself but possibly leaving other regions drier. The models warn of drought and forest damage as far away as the Amazon. These are modelled outcomes for very large, hypothetical installations, not certainties.

Oil worries and climate concerns lift China's green energy sales at Canton Fair

Oil worries and climate concerns lift China's green energy sales at Canton Fair

At the first phase of China's Canton Fair, a solar power and energy storage hall drew thousands of visitors a day, as Chinese makers turned worries about oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and about climate change into export orders. Zhejiang Era Solar has begun selling a lightweight solar panel made for balcony use, while Guangzhou-based Felicity Solar showed a battery cabinet and inverter system for factories, farms and shops. Demand is surging not only in the Middle East but also across Africa and Latin America, and the planned end of China's 6 per cent export tax rebate on batteries next year has pushed exporters to ship more now. Brisk overseas sales are helping makers offset fierce competition and excess capacity at home.

Hidden Arctic roots could decide the region's climate future, review finds

Hidden Arctic roots could decide the region's climate future, review finds

A major international review has found that plant roots beneath the Arctic tundra could play a decisive role in whether the region becomes a source or a sink of carbon as the climate warms. Arctic permafrost holds around 1,460 to 1,600 billion tonnes of organic carbon, roughly twice the amount in the atmosphere, and thawing ground is already releasing some of it. Roots can lock carbon into soil by supporting plant growth, but they can also stimulate microbes that release carbon dioxide and methane. The researchers say climate models must better capture these underground processes to predict whether warming will speed up or slow down.

Karandaaz Pakistan wins Green Climate Fund accreditation

Karandaaz Pakistan has been accredited by the Green Climate Fund as a direct access entity, after the fund's board approved it at its 46th meeting in Songdo, South Korea. The accreditation lets Karandaaz obtain, blend and channel international climate finance directly into high-impact projects in Pakistan linked to the country's climate pledges, its National Adaptation Plan and the Pakistan Green Taxonomy. Karandaaz says the status will help structure larger climate projects, ease funding bottlenecks for businesses and draw private capital toward Pakistan's climate agenda.

Tech workers, expats and climate buyers reshape Ireland's priciest homes

Ireland's most expensive homes are increasingly bought by tech workers, returning expats, wealthy Americans and buyers seeking refuge from extreme heat, rather than only by retirees. Property professionals put the prime market at 5 to 8 million euros, with about 10 homes a year selling above 5 million euros, mostly coastal properties and addresses in Dublin 4 and Dublin 6. One headline sale, Strancally Castle in County Waterford, fetched 51.2 million euros. Agents say many prime buyers pay cash, are Irish people returning after decades abroad, or Americans driven by US politics and climate.

EU climate funding hits €41.6 billion ahead of COP31 talks

The European Union and its 27 member states provided €41.6 billion in climate finance for developing countries, according to figures released by the Council of the EU ahead of the COP31 UN climate conference. The total includes €32.3 billion in public funding plus €9.3 billion in private finance mobilised by public interventions. Nearly half of the public money supported adaptation or projects that also cut emissions, and grants made up 41 percent of the public contribution. The EU budget contributed €4.3 billion and the European Investment Bank added €2.7 billion. The Council said the figures reaffirmed the EU's commitment to international climate finance as the talks, to be hosted in Türkiye's Antalya from November 9 to 20, approach.

Eco-anxiety takes the stand as Canadian youth sue Ottawa over climate inaction

In Canada's first federal youth climate trial, 15 young Canadians aged 17 to 25 are asking a Vancouver court to impose legally binding greenhouse gas emissions targets on the federal government. Testimony this week focused on their mental health, with a child psychiatrist telling the court that young people affected by wildfires have experienced depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress, a harm described as eco-anxiety. A 2022 federal health report noted that climate change affects young people's mental health disproportionately, and the case is part of a growing global movement using courts to demand stronger climate action.

NASA satellites get a decade of carbon dioxide data upgraded for sharper climate picture

Scientists have released an upgraded decade-long record of atmospheric carbon dioxide measured from space, sharpening one of the key tools for tracking climate change. Two NASA instruments, OCO-2 and OCO-3, capture more than a million observations of sunlight reflecting off Earth every day, turning them into carbon dioxide concentrations. A new processing algorithm, with better instrument calibration and improved handling of clouds, aerosols and ocean reflections, has now reprocessed the full record from September 2014 to the present. The research, published in the journal Earth and Space Science, finds the new record agrees more closely with highly accurate ground-based measurements, and it is now publicly available to help researchers study the carbon cycle and judge whether climate policies are working.

Pakistan urges UN to fully fund Loss and Damage support for climate victims

Pakistan has urged the United Nations to take urgent collective action on climate resilience and to fully fund the Loss and Damage Fund for vulnerable countries. Speaking in a UN General Assembly committee, Pakistan's delegate Saad Ahmad said climate-hit people must not bear the cost of a crisis they did little to create. He recalled floods in 2025 that affected nearly 6.9 million people, killed over 1,000 and displaced more than four million, and said climate finance must come as grants, not new debt. Pakistan said it is investing in ecosystem restoration, water resilience and nature-based solutions at home.

One Earth Summit in Hong Kong pushes AI-led climate action

More than 700 government, business and academic leaders gathered in Hong Kong for the third One Earth Summit, focused on using artificial intelligence and green technology to fight climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Speakers argued that human wisdom must guide AI development so its benefits reach the communities most at risk. Chinese officials pointed to China's rapid air-quality gains and its role as the world's largest supplier of affordable clean-energy equipment, while organisers stressed that open markets and shared innovation, not trade barriers, will speed up the green transition.

Green Climate Fund approves record $1.97 billion for climate projects

The Green Climate Fund’s board has approved a record $1.97 billion for 21 climate projects in developing countries, the largest amount ever approved at a single board meeting. The approvals take total funding in 2026 to a record $3.3 billion and bring the fund’s portfolio to 379 projects worth $22.3 billion, or $87.3 billion including co-financing. Thirty-four percent of the new funding will be managed by Direct Access Entities in developing countries, and five projects are the first single-country projects for their countries — Algeria, Cameroon, Moldova and Yemen. Executive Director Mafalda Duarte was also reappointed for a second four-year term, ahead of the COP31 climate talks in Turkey in early November.

EU gave 32.3 billion euros in climate finance in 2025, figures show

The European Union and its 27 member states provided 32.3 billion euros in public climate finance in 2025 and mobilised a further 9.3 billion euros in private finance to help developing countries cut emissions and adapt to climate change. The Council published the figures ahead of the COP31 climate conference in Antalya, Turkiye, in November. Nearly half of the public funding went to adaptation or combined adaptation and mitigation work, and 41 percent was grant-based. The figures are presented as confirmation of the EU's commitment to the developed countries' goal of mobilising 100 billion dollars a year in climate finance.

EU rules out new climate finance pledges at COP31 as poorer nations demand more

The European Union has ruled out new climate finance commitments at the COP31 climate conference, as rising energy costs strain budgets and developing countries push for more funding. A group of African countries has written to the United Nations climate chief, Simon Stiell, saying they will demand a tripling of climate adaptation finance at the summit. Poorer nations have told donors plainly that without more money for the transition, there will be no transition. The demands are expected to cause a stir at the conference, which begins in Turkey on November 9.

Switzerland adopts climate adaptation plan for 2026-2031

Switzerland's Federal Council has adopted a new climate adaptation strategy and action plan for 2026 to 2031. The plan names 30 fields of action, with 56 measures in total, to protect people, infrastructure and nature as heatwaves, summer droughts and heavy rain become more frequent and intense. The country's average temperature has already risen about 3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Priorities include cutting heat exposure in cities, safeguarding water supplies, guarding against natural hazards, and making agriculture, forests, ecosystems and transport more resilient. It also covers workplace safety in extreme heat, water quality, climate-resilient forests and Rhine river navigation in dry summers, plus 12 cross-sector measures on science, coordination and delivery.

Australian babies face more heatwaves as climate report warns kids pay the price

Australian babies are living through more heatwaves than a generation ago, with infants facing an average of 4.6 heatwave days a year over the past decade, 66 percent more than the 1986-2005 baseline, according to the 2026 MJA-Lancet Countdown report published on Thursday. Half of the 16,230 young people aged 14 to 19 surveyed said they were worried about climate change. The findings come as two United Nations human rights experts asked the Australian government to explain how its coal and gas approvals protect young people, putting children's health at the centre of the climate debate.

Young Canadians tell landmark climate trial of 'despair' over wildfires and floods

Young Canadians have testified about a sense of despair in Canada's first federal youth climate trial, La Rose v His Majesty the King, arguing that federal climate policy violates their rights to life, liberty and security. The 15 plaintiffs, aged 17 to 25, described thick wildfire smoke and overwhelming heat in their home towns, and repeated flooding that forced evacuations. One plaintiff from Calgary said wildfires were something her family had to be more and more aware of, while a First Nation member spoke of the threat to her community's traditional activities. The case is part of a growing global movement using courts to push governments on climate action.

EU unveils climate resilience plan after 200 billion euros in damage

The European Commission has presented a comprehensive framework to strengthen the European Union's climate resilience, after economic losses of about 200 billion euros between 2022 and 2025. The Commission warned that Europe is warming at double the global rate and needs urgent policy integration to deal with floods, heat and other climate damage. The framework aims to bring climate protection into planning across the bloc instead of treating disasters one by one.

Lancet report urges climate change to be declared a global health emergency

The 2026 Lancet Countdown report, published on 28 October ahead of the COP31 climate summit, says heat caused about three million deaths worldwide between 2016 and 2023, including a record 710,000 heat-related deaths in 2023, with more than 70 percent linked to human-caused climate change. Researchers say extreme heat cost the world economy more than $1 trillion a year in lost work capacity over the past three years, hitting Southeast Asia and Africa hardest, while clean-energy investment reached $2.1 trillion in 2025. They urge leaders to formally recognise climate change as a global health emergency so health is placed at the centre of every climate decision.
