Green trade could create 9.5 million jobs by 2030, ILO study finds

Key points

  • Growth in exports of green goods could support 9.5 million additional jobs worldwide by 2030, according to a new study by the International Labour Organization.
  • China would gain the most, with about 3.63 million jobs, followed by East Asia and the Pacific with 2.37 million and the European Union with 1.64 million, while South Asia and Africa together would gain fewer than 90,000.
  • About 3.5 million of the jobs would be directly in green-export sectors and around 6 million would be indirect jobs in supplying industries.

About 3.5 million of the jobs would be directly in green-export sectors and around 6 million would be indirect jobs in supplying industries. The study warns, however, that escalating tariffs and retaliation could wipe out about 530,000 of those jobs. Electrical and electronic equipment is the leading source of direct employment, and machinery and equipment drive 30 to 40 percent of green-trade jobs in most regions.
