CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second-division match on Monday. De Miguel was chasing a ball near midfield in stoppage time, with the match tied 2-2, when Owono raced out of his goal and struck him in the chest; Owono was sent off and the match was abandoned. De Miguel was resuscitated and taken to hospital, but his condition later worsened and his club announced his death on Tuesday morning. Police have opened an investigation under judicial supervision, and the Spanish football federation postponed Tuesday's Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches.

The wives of the Ukrainian, Italian and Estonian ambassadors to Australia have left the Canberra Women's International Club after Irina Petrakova, the wife of Russia's ambassador to Australia, was admitted as a member. The club's president said the club took legal advice and concluded that refusing membership on the grounds of a person's country of origin would violate anti-discrimination law. Ukraine's ambassador's wife wrote that she objected to Petrakova's role as a representative of Russia, not to her nationality, while the European Union's ambassador to Australia said EU ambassadors were deeply disappointed by the decision.

Apple will require apps that offer dating or romantic-relationship features, including AI companions that engage in sexual or romantic content, to carry an 18-and-up age rating. Developers must declare the new dating-and-relationships and shared-location details from November 16, and complete them for all apps by January 12, 2027. The change is meant to make it harder for minors to use such apps, while most major dating services already limit their platforms to adults.

Brookfield has walked away from the Beaudry, a 695-foot luxury apartment tower in downtown Los Angeles that cost about $600 million and opened less than four years ago. The tower has 785 homes, is about 95 percent occupied and asks around $4,200 a month in rent, yet the firm decided not to refinance its roughly $360 million loan, saying high borrowing costs had wiped out its equity. The exit underlines how hard downtown Los Angeles has found recovery since the pandemic, with the lender now working to sell the loan.

Brent crude plunged more than $6 a barrel on Tuesday morning, falling from $107.24 to $100.80 before recovering to around $104. Traders reacted to a run of conflicting reports about possible United States-Iran negotiations, including claims of a breakthrough that were later denied, with officials saying no agreement had been reached. The sharp swing followed a 7.6 percent fall on Monday that had left Brent at $104.77, and the Strait of Hormuz remained restricted.

Researchers have analysed hair and nail samples from eight Inca mummies found on mountains in Peru and Argentina, revealing the psychoactive substances given to children before they were sacrificed in the capacocha ritual around 500 years ago. All eight had traces of cocaine from chewing coca leaves, which may have helped them endure long mountain journeys. Four also showed signs of alcohol, likely the corn beer chicha, given to calm them in the final stage. One famous mummy, the Lady of Ampato, also carried harmine, linked to a plant used in ayahuasca, suggesting a special role in ceremonies at that mountain. The findings were published in the journal Antiquity.

Rio Tinto is putting millions of dollars into stopping poisonous cane toads from reaching the Pilbara region of western Australia, where the mining company has a vast iron ore operation. Together with Curtin University in Perth and other partners, it will spend A$28 million building a toad containment zone across 7,500 square kilometres of land between the Great Sandy Desert and the Indian Ocean. The five-year project, starting in 2027, aims to cut off the toads' water supply by making dams, storage tanks and other ground-level water sources toad-proof. Cane toads were brought to Australia in 1935 to control beetles in sugar cane, and have since marched west at 40 to 60 kilometres a year. Without action, experts say they would reach the Pilbara within two decades, where their toxins are lethal to native wildlife and threaten the region's ecosystem.

A new study has found that babies born in southeast Louisiana's most industrially polluted areas were far more likely to have severe congenital heart defects. Researchers compared 454 infants with heart defects born between 2018 and 2021 with 1,362 infants without them, using pollution data for the areas where their mothers lived. Babies from the most polluted areas had 4.29 times the odds of a severe heart defect compared with babies from low-pollution areas, and babies from intermediate-pollution areas had 3.09 times the odds. The study, published in the journal Environmental Health, is the first to examine this link in Louisiana, and it pointed to benzene and formaldehyde among the chemicals with the highest levels.

Russia has launched its biggest mass attack on Ukraine's energy facilities this year, hitting substations, transmission systems and power plants across 10 regions on November 3 and cutting power to households across the country. Ukraine's grid operator Ukrenergo said energy sites were struck more than 20 times in a day, using an unprecedented number of weapons, while the country's largest private energy firm, DTEK, said three of its thermal power plants stopped generating after what it called one of the most serious attacks ever on its facilities. Emergency power cuts were imposed in Kyiv and several regions, and Kyiv also reported water supply disruptions. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched 289 drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles overnight, mostly at energy infrastructure, and said a hospital in Kharkiv was also struck, injuring 73 people. Ukraine is bracing for another difficult winter after millions lost heating and power in the cold last winter.

Hundreds of women, including patients from the United States, have travelled to clinics overseas over the past decade for mitochondrial replacement therapy, an experimental technique marketed as a way to improve fertility in older patients, according to an investigation published on November 2. Scientists and ethicists said there is little evidence the procedure helps most of these women. The technique, often called three-parent IVF, moves genetic material from the intended mother's egg or embryo into a donor egg, and was developed to reduce the risk of children inheriting serious mitochondrial diseases. It is effectively barred in the United States, but an Illinois-based broker, International Fertility Group of North America, has connected women in the US and Europe to clinics abroad, raising its package price from 20,000 dollars to 30,000 dollars this year, with medicines, donor eggs and genetic testing often adding more. The investigation found the average age of the broker's patients rose from 39.2 in 2022 to 45.6 last year, and scientists said most age-related infertility comes from chromosomal errors in older eggs, which replacing mitochondria is unlikely to fix.

Newly released video shows Tennessee National Guard troops in Memphis pointing their handguns at a man lying on a sidewalk as he lay dying after a Guard member shot him, county prosecutors have said. The footage, released by the Shelby County District Attorney's Office, covers the aftermath of the July 5 shooting of 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson and includes police body camera, street camera and bystander phone video, but it does not show the initial encounter or the moment he was shot. A Memphis police officer is heard calling for an ambulance and asking the troops whether they have a medical kit. Johnson died at the scene from a single gunshot wound; an autopsy report shared by his family found he was shot in the back, contradicting earlier accounts that he was facing the troops with a gun. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is still examining the case, and prosecutors have not yet decided whether charges will be filed.

A child in Lewis County, New York, has died in connection with an ongoing measles outbreak, the first measles-associated death in the state in more than 30 years, state and county health officials announced on Monday. No further details about the child were released, and officials asked for the family's privacy to be respected. New York had recorded 178 measles cases this year as of October 24, including 15 in Lewis County, and Governor Kathy Hochul had already declared a state disaster emergency over the outbreak. Health officials urged New Yorkers to stay up to date on vaccinations, noting two doses of the MMR vaccine give about 97 percent protection, and federal epidemiologists have been deployed to help the state respond.

Researchers have uncovered a massive 2,600-year-old mudbrick complex beneath the ancient Egyptian city of Buto, in the northwestern Nile Delta, using satellite radar and underground electrical scans instead of digging. Radar from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 satellite revealed an oval anomaly about 128 by 62 metres beneath a mound known as Kom C, and electrical surveys mapped a large rectangular mudbrick structure about 20 by 25 metres, three to six metres below the surface. The structure dates to Egypt's 26th Dynasty, or Saite period, roughly 688 to 525 BC, and beneath it lies a thick layer of clean sand that researchers believe was deliberately laid as a foundation to spread weight, drain water and protect the bricks from the Delta's unstable clay. Buto, now Tell el-Fara'in, was a major religious centre and home of the cobra goddess Wadjet, and the building's exact purpose, possibly a tomb, priests' dwelling or sanctuary, is not yet known. The findings were published in the journal Acta Geophysica.

Researchers have found a new UEFI bootkit, dubbed BlackX, that revives the techniques of the BlackLotus bootkit to bypass Windows Secure Boot on fully patched machines. It was seen in attacks on diplomatic missions in Central Asia, and it works by exploiting a flaw known as Baton Drop after an attacker has already gained administrator access, installing custom boot keys so attacker-controlled files load at startup and injecting a signed driver into the Windows kernel. The machines were fully updated, but vulnerable boot components signed under an older 2011 certificate were still trusted because the required revocation steps had not taken effect, which is why patching alone did not stop it. Attribution to the APT41 group is only made with medium confidence and remains unconfirmed, and the report raises the question of whether Microsoft bears blame for the revocation gap.

Independent testing of 77 breakfast cereal brands by the nonprofit Clean Label Project found that cereals made with cocoa, chocolate or cacao contained more than twice as much lead as cereals without them. Rice-based cereals had 12 times as much arsenic as other grains, while wheat and oat cereals had 2.5 times more acrylamide than rice or corn options. The weedkiller glyphosate was also found in high amounts, with just four cereals accounting for 81% of the total, though the report did not name the worst cereals or say any product broke a safety limit. No BPA or BPS was found in any cereal tested.

In Butembo in eastern Congo, Ebola survivors who recovered from the disease are now working in isolation wards, comforting sick children whose parents are not allowed to touch them. Jerkis Mahamba, 29, caught Ebola in September and recovered after 18 days of treatment at the same centre; his immunity means he can hold children, rock them to sleep and play with them. The charity Medecins Sans Frontieres has hired survivors as ward helpers, cleaners and community workers, and doctors say their stories help fight fear and stigma and encourage people with symptoms to seek care quickly.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says two sponsors left the team after it promoted Kimi Antonelli to replace Lewis Hamilton, with the backers asking 'who is this kid?' Wolff said he had already decided Antonelli would take the seat the moment Hamilton confirmed his move to Ferrari, and that the sponsors who stayed are now sharing in the reward after Antonelli clinched the world championship in Mexico City. Wolff did not name the companies that walked away.

A study presented at Kidney Week in Denver found that adults aged 80 and older with chronic kidney disease who took SGLT2 inhibitor drugs had a significantly lower risk of dying over two years than matched patients who did not take them. Researchers analysed 23,765 users and non-users matched for other illnesses, lab results and frailty, and treated patients also had lower risks of major heart and kidney events. The authors stressed that very old patients are often left out of large trials, so treatment needs a careful, individual risk-benefit check and close monitoring.
A mother of two from Merthyr Tydfil says she was told she was too young for breast cancer and that her concerns could be medical anxiety after finding a lump in her breast. Beth Jenkins, 42, was prescribed antibiotics and told the lump might be linked to postnatal depression, but she pushed for further checks. She was later diagnosed with lobular breast cancer, with a 5cm tumour that had spread to three lymph nodes, and she now runs fundraising events for Merthyr Cancer Aid.
