Ronaldo beats Messi to win inaugural BOAT award for best Ballon d'Or season

Key points

  • Cristiano Ronaldo has won the first BOAT award, with fans voting his 2008 season at Manchester United the greatest Ballon d'Or-winning season of all time.
  • His 2007-08 campaign, in which he scored 42 goals as United won the Premier League and the Champions League, finished ahead of Lionel Messi's 2012 season, when Messi scored a record 91 goals in a calendar year.
  • Ronaldo's 2017 season with Real Madrid finished third.

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the first BOAT award, with fans voting his 2008 season at Manchester United the greatest Ballon d'Or-winning season of all time. His 2007-08 campaign, in which he scored 42 goals as United won the Premier League and the Champions League, finished ahead of Lionel Messi's 2012 season, when Messi scored a record 91 goals in a calendar year. Ronaldo's 2017 season with Real Madrid finished third. The award, run by France Football as a paid fan vote costing one euro per vote, is symbolic rather than an official Ballon d'Or, and Messi still leads the official count eight awards to five. Ronaldo thanked fans on social media, saying the honour belonged to them too.
