Physicists say they created a tiny, simplified universe in the lab and watched something like time emerge from it without any clock ticking outside. In the experiment, time appeared as a property of how parts of the system changed in relation to each other, rather than as a fixed background. The work is an early step toward understanding how time itself may have arisen in the real universe, and researchers stress it is a model, not a second universe.
