Nuclear science sharpens Pakistan's tracking of groundwater

Nuclear science sharpens Pakistan's tracking of groundwater

Key points

  • Pakistan has strengthened its ability to track groundwater using nuclear science, according to an International Atomic Energy Agency report.
  • Isotope techniques let scientists identify where aquifers are recharged, work out the age of groundwater, and trace pollution pathways.
  • Studies in the Indus Plain, Quetta Valley and Cholistan Desert have produced reliable estimates of recharge rates and links between aquifers.

Isotope techniques let scientists identify where aquifers are recharged, work out the age of groundwater, and trace pollution pathways. Studies in the Indus Plain, Quetta Valley and Cholistan Desert have produced reliable estimates of recharge rates and links between aquifers. The Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology now hosts one of the region's most advanced isotope labs, with 12 more labs across the country, and its data is being built into national groundwater management models.
