The Federal Board of Revenue has issued a new procedure for the payment and adjustment of additional sales tax on electricity used by steel manufacturers that run on captive power or generate their own electricity. Under Sales Tax General Order No. 31 of 2026, covered manufacturers must pay the tax at the prescribed rate on electricity units used for steelmaking in each tax period, keep proper generation and consumption records, and declare the units in their sales tax return. Payment must be made through a special PSID challan by the 5th day of the following month, and the verified amount can then be adjusted against output sales tax. The order takes effect from July 1, 2026.
