His management agency confirmed the news on 1 November, saying he was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Mexico City ahead of a scheduled performance on 31 October and later pronounced dead in hospital. No cause of death was publicly confirmed in the first reports. Atkins formed Cybotron in 1980, recorded as Model 500, founded the Metroplex label, and, with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson as the Belleville Three, helped create the futuristic electronic sound that became techno and influenced dance music around the world.
