Thousands of people protested in Jakarta and other Indonesian cities on Wednesday against economic hardship, alleged government corruption and the handling of devastating wildfires that have filled the air with toxic haze and made thousands ill. Protesters raised the three-finger salute and carried signs such as 'Hungry? Eat the Rich!' and 'No Clean Air Under Dirty Government', directing anger at President Prabowo Subianto, whose popularity has fallen two years into his term. Police deployed about 14,000 officers and soldiers in Jakarta, and organisers demanded the government declare a national emergency to fight fires that have destroyed more than 1.9 million hectares in nine months.
